Environmental mapping is a critical factor for aspects of basic research related to the knowledge of ecosystems and for land management projects.
Ecological cartography is very developed on shore, where the mapping of vegetation, mesologic and soil characteristics has become a fundamental part of environmental studies and land management. In Italy, the need for ecological mapping for the seas has been generally accepted for understanding geological aspects – so much so that marine areas have been inserted into the National Geologic Service program – but this has still not reached the same level as biological aspects.
The Tavolara Punta Coda Protected Marine Area has already created a bionomic map with a scale of 1:25,000, a first for all Protected Marine Areas in Italy.
Prior to the validation and eventual additions, this map served as the base for a larger thematic map of the marine territory of the Area. Together with similar maps, this map allows for classification and environmental evaluation necessary for proper management of the Marine Area.
The Geographic Information System, commonly called the GIS, of the Protected Marine Area includes thematic, bionomic, geomorphologic, natural emergency maps, along with information regarding land grants. This information can be interfaced with thematic maps through the GIS, providing an excellent tool for land management and obtaining quantitative information.
